Whitemail review
A self-hosted mail and groupware server for organizations managing their own infrastructure.

Whitemail is a self-hosted business mail server and collaboration platform for organizations that want email on infrastructure they control. It combines email with shared calendars and contacts, directory features, mobile synchronization, and browser-based webmail. Its organization-size licensing spans Basic for up to 100 users through Enterprise for 1,000 or more, making it relevant to small, mid-market, and enterprise organizations that want control over deployment.
Its protocol and client coverage is a central strength. The server supports SMTP for sending, receiving, and routing; IMAP and Exchange sync for mailbox access; and CalDAV and CardDAV for calendars and contacts. ActiveSync supports mobile email, calendar, and contact synchronization, while Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Exchange, Microsoft 365, and Google Workspace are listed integrations. Migration is supported from Exchange, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, or IMAP sources. That breadth suits teams moving from existing mail systems or connecting familiar clients, though the deployment remains self-hosted rather than a hosted service.
Plans add administrative and operational capabilities as they progress. Basic includes email and collaboration, shared calendars and contacts, and spam and virus filtering; ActiveSync is an add-on. Professional adds directory and two-factor authentication administration plus priority email support, while ActiveSync remains an add-on. Premier adds capacity planning and SLAs, with high-availability clustering available as an add-on. Enterprise includes ActiveSync and cluster high availability, along with 24/7 support and migration. The vendor says Basic is free to get started, while plan purchases go through sales. Whitemail is a fit for organizations prepared to operate their own mail infrastructure; teams seeking a hosted server or published plan pricing should consider alternatives.
