Our verdict on Wero
Wero is a mobile payment wallet from the European Payments Initiative for people who want to make account-to-account payments through a bank-linked app. Available on iOS and Android, it supports sending, receiving, requesting and splitting money, as well as paying participating merchants in stores and online. Recipients can be identified by phone number, email or QR code instead of an IBAN. Some banks also offer Wero within their own mobile apps, so the way users access it can depend on their bank.
Its main strength is the range of everyday payment tasks in one place: peer transfers, bill and invoice payments by QR code, in-store QR checkout, online payments and recurring subscription approval and management. Payment activity is trackable, and authentication can use Face ID, fingerprint or PIN. The app connects to a qualifying bank account and uses SEPA Instant Credit Transfer for transfers. It is a focused option for users who want mobile payments tied to their bank rather than a separate balance-oriented wallet.
Wero is free and says it charges no transaction fees, although a bank may charge its own fee. Availability of features and supported countries depends on the user's bank and residence, and in-store payments are limited to participating merchants. Wero lists chat, phone and documentation support, and GDPR compliance. It suits people whose bank and country support the service and whose payment needs center on transfers and QR-based checkout; those needing broad merchant acceptance or access independent of bank and country support should consider another payment app.
