Weave review
A focused, experimental Win32 layer for Linux developers—not a broad Wine replacement.

Weave is an experimental, open-source compatibility layer for running selected Windows desktop applications on Linux. Developed by IronTree Software, it reimplements Win32 APIs in Rust and translates Windows calls to native Linux facilities. The project targets Linux x86-64 and is distributed under GPL-3.0. Its intended audience is Linux developers who want to explore a native Win32 layer, rather than users looking for broad compatibility across a large Windows application catalog.
Its strongest technical focus is process isolation. Weave runs applications out of process and combines Landlock filesystem isolation with seccomp-BPF syscall filtering. Unix-domain-socket IPC separates guest and host communication, while virtual filesystem prefixes provide application-specific environments. The PE loader and ntdll syscall gateway support the Windows execution path, and PipeWire integration covers audio. Together, these features give Weave a clearly defined systems-oriented design, with security boundaries and Linux integration taking priority over broad application coverage.
Weave is free and open source, with no paid tiers described. The published project status also sets practical expectations: graphics acceleration is absent, and the compatibility database, GUI manager, and install flow are still scaffolded or in progress. The project is early-stage and experimental, and the stated focus is a narrow set of supported applications. Choose Weave if you are a Linux developer interested in its Rust implementation, sandboxing model, prefixes, and native Linux facilities. Choose an alternative if you need graphics acceleration, a broader application target, or a more complete installation and discovery experience.
Weave pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Rust-native Win32 reimplementation with PE loading and an ntdll syscall gateway
- Out-of-process sandboxing with Landlock isolation and seccomp-BPF filtering
- Virtual filesystem prefixes plus PipeWire audio integration
- Where it doesn't
- No graphics acceleration for Windows applications
- Targets selected applications rather than broad Wine compatibility
- Early-stage project with no shipped releases listed
