WAL-G review
A portable command-line choice for PostgreSQL WAL archiving and point-in-time recovery.

WAL-G is an open-source command-line utility for backing up, archiving, and restoring databases to remote or local storage. It is particularly suited to teams managing PostgreSQL environments that need WAL archiving, continuous backup workflows, and point-in-time recovery. It also supports MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, MongoDB, Redis, Greenplum, Cloudberry, and other database integrations. Deployment runs across Windows, macOS, Linux, and self-hosted environments.
PostgreSQL recovery is the standout capability. WAL-G combines full and incremental backups with WAL archiving, retention commands, integrity verification for PostgreSQL WAL archives, and point-in-time recovery workflows. Partial restore and delta backups can support more targeted recovery operations. Compression options include LZ4, LZMA, ZSTD, and Brotli, while client-side encryption options add control over how backup data is protected. Backup restoration can run from remote storage rather than requiring every archive to remain local.
Its ecosystem fit is broad for a self-managed tool. Storage targets include Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Storage, Alicloud OSS, OpenStack Swift, SSH, and the local filesystem. Retention is configured through commands or storage settings instead of vendor-defined plan limits, which gives operators control but leaves more responsibility for configuration and maintenance. Choose WAL-G when portability, PostgreSQL WAL workflows, and direct control over storage matter. Teams seeking a hosted backup service or vendor-managed operations should choose a different approach.
WAL-G pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Point-in-time recovery with continuous WAL archiving
- Full, incremental, partial, and delta backup workflows
- Supports major object stores, SSH, and local filesystems
- Where it doesn't
- Self-hosted command-line deployment requires operational ownership
- Not a hosted backup service with vendor-managed infrastructure
- Some additional database integrations remain work in progress
