Our verdict on vvvv

vvvv is a visual-first live-programming environment for creative coders, developers, media-server builders, installation designers, and teams creating interactive spaces. It combines node-based programming with .NET, C#, F#, shaders, video, audio, lighting, projection mapping, 2D, 3D, VR, computer vision, and device integrations. Programs can run directly on target devices or be exported as applications, making vvvv a fit for realtime installations and live visuals rather than a conventional offline VFX workflow.

The licensing structure separates development from deployment. The vvvv gamma Developer License is required for each developer on a commercial project and includes unlimited application exports; licenses can be valid forever or for a covered period, depending on the selected plan. The gamma Device License applies when vvvv gamma runs on devices other than a developer’s PC, with permanent and covered-period options. Published plans show a vvvv beta Weekly License at 200 EUR one-time for seven consecutive days, a beta Permanent License at 500 EUR one-time, and a beta Educational License at 150 EUR one-time. Educational use of gamma is free of charge, while its optional educational support license is 270 EUR one-time.

Its feature set is broad within realtime visual systems: Skia provides realtime 2D rendering, Stride supports realtime 3D and VR rendering, and the platform includes particles, shader-based image effects, video and image-sequence playback, scripting, command-line compilation, and distributed rendering. Integrations include VST3, Rive, CEF, Spout, VIOSO, Scalable Display Systems, Augmenta, BlueIOT, OptiTrack, and Captury. Windows, Linux, and macOS console export support are listed, but vvvv itself has no native macOS version. Choose vvvv for interactive media systems and live visual programming; choose another tool if your priority is conventional VFX production.
