VolSync is an open-source Kubernetes operator for asynchronously replicating persistent volumes within or across clusters. It is designed for storage-focused disaster recovery, migration, testing with production data, and periodic backups. Users configure ReplicationSource and ReplicationDestination resources to define backup targets, schedules, retention, and restore behavior. The self-hosted deployment is installed through Helm, making it a fit for teams that manage their own Kubernetes environments and want persistent-volume protection without a commercial subscription.

Its strongest capability is breadth within persistent-volume data movement. Restic-based backups cover PersistentVolume data, while rsync supports asynchronous replication and Rclone supports replication to intermediate cloud storage. Cross-cluster persistent-volume replication extends the design beyond a single Kubernetes cluster. Triggers can be scheduled, manual, or continuous, and retention can be configured across hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, and time-window options. Point-in-time copies use PVC clones or VolumeSnapshots, and backups can be restored into existing or provisioned PVCs. These controls suit recovery workflows that need more than a single recurring backup schedule.

The trade-off is a focused scope. VolSync addresses persistent-volume data rather than presenting a broader application-protection layer, and its documented consistency model is crash-consistent rather than application-aware. Some functions depend on Kubernetes storage and snapshot components, so the surrounding cluster configuration matters during deployment and recovery planning. Teams seeking self-hosted PV replication, custom retention, and cross-cluster movement should consider VolSync; teams that need verified cross-cluster restores or built-in application-aware consistency should look for a platform with those capabilities.

VolSync pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Supports Restic backups, rsync replication, and cloud replication via Rclone
    • Offers cross-cluster PV replication with scheduled or continuous triggers
    • Provides custom retention and point-in-time PVC recovery options
  • Where it doesn't
    • Application consistency is documented as crash-consistent
    • Some functionality requires Kubernetes storage and snapshot components
    • Cross-cluster restore verification is not provided
