Volcano review
A Kubernetes-native scheduler for coordinated GPU, AI, and batch workloads.

Volcano is an open-source, Kubernetes-native scheduling system for AI, machine learning, big data, scientific computing, and other high-performance workloads. It supports native Kubernetes resources and VolcanoJobs, with task definitions, queues, priorities, and lifecycle policies. The product is best suited to teams managing Kubernetes-native batch and AI workloads that need coordinated multi-pod execution, GPU allocation, and shared resource controls.
Volcano is distributed as a self-hosted Kubernetes component and can be installed with YAML manifests, source code, or Helm charts. Its open-source model includes a free plan, while deployment remains part of the platform operation rather than a vendor-hosted service. The scheduler combines queue resource quotas, borrowing, reclamation, preemption, and multi-tenant isolation. Monitoring metrics are available, with an optional Prometheus/Grafana dashboard for operational visibility.
Its main strength is breadth across scheduling needs and AI ecosystems. Gang scheduling, GPU scheduling and sharing, CUDA and MIG modes, topology awareness, and multi-cluster job scheduling address distributed workloads with different resource requirements. Integrations include Spark, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Flink, Argo, MindSpore, PaddlePaddle, Ray, Kubeflow, MPI, Horovod, and MXNet. Choose Volcano when Kubernetes control and batch scheduling depth matter more than a managed service. Teams seeking vendor-hosted infrastructure or a cloud-GPU offering should choose an alternative built around those delivery models.
Volcano pros and cons

- GPU sharing supports CUDA and MIG modes
- Quotas, borrowing, and preemption support multi-tenant control
- Where it doesn't
- Requires an existing Kubernetes cluster
- Self-hosted deployment places operations with your team
- No vendor-hosted cloud-GPU service in its product model
