VMware vSAN review
A VMware-centered storage platform with broad protocols and strong virtualization integration.

VMware vSAN is a software-defined storage platform integrated into VMware’s hypervisor and virtualization stack. It pools local and direct-attached storage from ESXi hosts into shared vSAN datastores for virtual-machine and container workloads. The platform is aimed primarily at mid-market and enterprise organizations operating private-cloud, data-center, edge, or qualified public-cloud environments, with VMware-centered virtual machine storage as its clearest fit.
Its ecosystem coverage is a major part of the product’s value. vSAN integrates with VMware vSphere and VMware Cloud Foundation, as well as vSphere Kubernetes Service, Kubernetes CSI, VCF Automation, and VMware Live Recovery. Storage options include block storage, NFSv3, NFSv4.1, and SMB file shares. For data protection, it supports RAID-1 mirroring, RAID-5/6 erasure coding, and asynchronous vSAN-to-vSAN replication. Kubernetes persistent storage through CSI extends the platform beyond virtual machines while keeping the storage layer connected to the VMware environment.
The breadth is useful for organizations that want one software-defined storage layer across virtual-machine and container workloads. Clusters can support up to 64 hosts, and the platform includes both file services and replication alongside its core shared-datastore model. Native S3-compatible object storage is documented as a technology preview for vSAN in VCF 9.1, so object storage should not be treated as an established equivalent to its block and file capabilities. Choose vSAN when VMware integration, shared virtual-machine storage, and multiple protection methods are priorities; consider a different product when mature native S3 object storage or a broader non-VMware focus is central.
VMware vSAN pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Pools local storage into shared datastores for virtual machines
- Combines block, file, replication, erasure coding, and Kubernetes CSI
- Supports clusters of up to 64 hosts
- Where it doesn't
- Native S3-compatible object storage is a technology preview
- Its strongest fit is the VMware virtualization ecosystem
- Designed primarily for mid-market and enterprise deployments
