VMware Avi Load Balancer review
A broad enterprise load balancer with especially deep VMware integration.

VMware Avi Load Balancer is a software-defined application delivery platform for enterprise networking and infrastructure teams. It supports Layer 4–7 load balancing, local and global server load balancing, Kubernetes ingress and Gateway API deployments, web application security, analytics, automation, and autoscaling. The platform is designed for virtual machine, container, and bare-metal workloads across private, public, and hybrid cloud environments. Organizations built around VMware infrastructure are the clearest fit, while teams seeking a small, narrowly focused load-balancing tool may find its scope broader than necessary.
Its strongest differentiator is the VMware ecosystem fit. Avi integrates with VMware Cloud Foundation, VMware vSphere, VMware Kubernetes Service, vSphere Supervisor, VCF Automation, VCF Operations, vCenter, and NSX. That gives infrastructure teams a common platform for application delivery across VMware environments while also supporting Kubernetes and bare-metal workloads. REST API automation extends the platform for operational workflows, and real-time application analytics adds visibility beyond traffic distribution. Kubernetes support includes both ingress and Gateway API, which suits teams standardizing application delivery across modern cluster environments.
Security and traffic-management capabilities are integrated into the same enterprise offering. The product combines TLS offloading, TLS 1.3 support, a web application firewall, API security, autoscaling, and auto-healing with local and global traffic management. Pricing follows a contact-sales model through Broadcom, so buyers should expect an enterprise procurement process rather than a self-serve plan comparison. VMware-centric infrastructure teams that need balancing, security, analytics, and automation in one platform should shortlist Avi. Organizations that do not need VMware integrations, global traffic management, or Kubernetes features may prefer a simpler alternative.
VMware Avi Load Balancer pros and cons
- Where it wins

- Supports Kubernetes ingress, Gateway API, WAF, API security, and TLS 1.3
- Integrates deeply with VMware Cloud Foundation, vSphere, NSX, and vCenter
- Where it doesn't
- Enterprise pricing requires contacting sales
- Its broad feature set may exceed the needs of simpler deployments
- Standalone and multi-cloud use may be less compelling without VMware infrastructure
