Our verdict on vkd3d-proton
vkd3d-proton is an open-source compatibility layer that implements the Direct3D 12 API on top of Vulkan. It provides d3d12.dll and d3d12core.dll as drop-in replacements and is intended for game compatibility in Wine-based environments such as Proton. The project supports Windows and Linux, with native Linux builds described as development-oriented and native Windows use mainly intended for developer testing. Its best fit is users who need Direct3D 12 translated to Vulkan within a Proton or Wine setup.
Its feature set reaches beyond basic API translation. vkd3d-proton supports DirectX Raytracing configuration and DXR features, D3D12 view instancing, Vulkan present timing, and shader caching with configurable shader-cache paths. It also exposes NVAPI and AMD AGS interfaces for selected features. These capabilities make it relevant for modern games and graphics paths that depend on more than core Direct3D 12 behavior, while Vulkan 1.3 and descriptor indexing are listed requirements.
The project is free and open-source, and its runtime model is translation rather than native Direct3D execution. Proton integration is a central part of its role, including Steam-oriented use through Proton. Choose vkd3d-proton when your environment already relies on Wine or Proton and needs D3D12 over Vulkan with support for selected advanced graphics features. It is less suitable as a general-purpose native Windows runtime or as a polished standalone application, since native Windows use is mainly for developer testing and native Linux builds are development-oriented.
