Virtual Data Platform is a low-code/no-code data virtualization and integration platform for enterprises that need governed access to distributed data without replicating it into an intermediate store. It is particularly suited to SAP-focused teams working across SAP BW, BW/4HANA, ERP, S/4HANA, ECC, HANA, Datasphere and Business One. Users can model virtual datasets and provide access through a web portal, SQL-compatible tools, REST/OData endpoints, Excel, Power BI, Python, R and MCP-enabled AI applications.

Its strongest fit is the breadth of its enterprise connectivity and consumption options. The platform supports Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle Database and IBM Db2 alongside its SAP integrations. Cross-network gateways use outbound-only connections, while native and ODBC/OData connectors extend access across enterprise systems. A SQL Server-compatible endpoint supports Power BI and other SQL clients, and per-user sandboxes provide in-memory processing. These capabilities make it suitable when teams need one virtual access layer rather than separate replicated datasets for each tool.

The trade-off is its deployment and security scope. Virtual Data Platform is cloud-hosted and does not offer self-hosted deployment, so organizations requiring local installation should choose another option. It also does not provide row-level security, which may limit fit for use cases that require dataset access to vary by individual rows. Pricing is handled through contact with sales, and a free trial is available. Choose it for SAP-centered federation, visual data modeling and broad API, BI and AI access; consider alternatives when self-hosting or row-level security is essential.

Virtual Data Platform pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Real-time federation across SAP, databases, networks and cloud systems
    • Visual modeling with virtual datasets, functions, models and code files
    • SQL, REST/OData, BI, developer and AI-agent access options
  • Where it doesn't
    • Cloud-only deployment excludes self-hosted environments
    • No row-level security capability
    • Pricing requires contacting sales
