VIA review
A focused browser configurator for compatible QMK keyboards, with keymaps, macros, and onboard storage.

VIA is an open-source, web-based interface for configuring compatible QMK-powered mechanical keyboards. It is aimed at keyboard users who want to change keymaps, create macros, manage layouts, and configure supported lighting through a browser rather than recompiling firmware. The interface communicates with compatible keyboards over USB and can store dynamic keymaps and macros in the keyboard’s non-volatile memory. The published compatibility count is more than 1,400 keyboards, but support depends on the individual device having compatible firmware and a VIA definition.
Its strongest fit is focused keyboard customization. Users can assign keys, create and configure macros, adjust RGB or backlight settings when the keyboard supports them, and work with layout options. Save and load menus help manage configurations, while rotary encoder map support extends customization beyond standard keys. QMK is the central ecosystem connection, so VIA makes the most sense for keyboards already built around that firmware rather than for general-purpose mouse and keyboard management across unrelated hardware.
VIA’s browser-first design keeps the product focused, but it also defines its boundaries. The published platform is web-based, and keyboard communication depends on USB connectivity. Lighting controls are conditional, and the overall experience depends on compatibility at both the keyboard and firmware level. Choose VIA if your QMK keyboard is supported and you want direct configuration of keymaps, macros, layouts, and onboard settings. Consider another tool if you need broad peripheral coverage, configuration for non-QMK devices, or controls that do not depend on a compatible keyboard definition.
