Verdaccio is an open-source, self-hosted private npm registry for teams that publish and consume private JavaScript packages. It runs as a Node.js application and provides a web user interface alongside registry workflows. Teams can publish private packages, proxy remote registries such as npmjs.org, cache package metadata and tarballs, and link multiple upstream registries. Its MIT license and open-source model make it suited to organizations that want control over deployment and storage without a license cost.

The strongest fit is an npm-centered development environment. Verdaccio supports npm, Yarn, and pnpm, while package controls cover access, publishing, unpublishing, staging, and group-based permissions. Those controls provide fine-grained management for private packages, and pluggable storage backends allow the deployment to use the local filesystem or a configured storage plugin. Docker images and Kubernetes Helm deployment support give teams established deployment paths, but Docker is a deployment option rather than a format for stored container artifacts.

Verdaccio’s narrow scope is its defining trade-off. It is designed for npm packages, not as a general-purpose repository for multiple artifact formats, and it does not support containers as artifacts. Storage capacity and behavior depend on the local filesystem or selected storage plugin, so deployment planning should account for that responsibility. Choose Verdaccio when private npm hosting, upstream proxying, caching, and self-hosting are the priority. Teams needing a broader repository covering container artifacts and other formats should choose a more general-purpose product.

  • Where it doesn't
    • Focused on npm rather than multi-format artifact management
    • Does not support containers as stored artifacts
    • Storage depends on the local filesystem or a storage plugin
