Veeam Backup & Replication is the backup and recovery engine within Veeam Data Platform. It protects virtual machines, physical servers, cloud workloads, NAS, and supported applications, making it suited to IT teams managing business workloads across self-managed or hybrid infrastructure. The platform combines image-level backup, replication, instant recovery, application-aware processing, and granular recovery for files and application items. It also supports bare-metal restore and offers both a free plan and a 30-day free trial.
Its strongest fit is a mixed virtual and hybrid environment. Integrations include VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, Proxmox VE, AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, NAS, Veeam Agents, and Veeam Cloud Connect. Recovery targets span VMware vSphere, Hyper-V, AHV, and cloud environments, while the REST API and PowerShell automation support operational workflows. This breadth gives teams options across hypervisors, public clouds, and physical systems rather than locking protection to one platform.
Protection and recovery controls are another key consideration. Application-aware processing supports transactionally consistent backups, while immutable backup storage and object-lock support address backup tampering risks. Malware scanning and clean-recovery verification add recovery-focused safeguards, and role-based access control with SAML single sign-on supports controlled administration. The Community Edition is limited to 10 workloads, while Veeam Data Platform Essentials is designed for small businesses and licensed per workload with VUL. Choose Veeam for broad server coverage and recovery flexibility; teams needing only a narrow backup function may prefer a more focused tool.
