Varnish Enterprise is commercial HTTP caching and edge-delivery software for enterprises, service providers, media companies, and teams running high-volume websites, APIs, streaming services, private CDNs, and artifact repositories. Its core approach combines HTTP reverse-proxy caching with VCL-based cache policy and routing. The Massive Storage Engine supports memory and disk-backed storage, while persistent caching keeps stored content available across restarts. It runs on supported Linux systems and can also be deployed with Kubernetes or through cloud offerings.

The product’s strongest case is breadth across delivery workloads. It supports HTTP/2 and TLS termination, video range caching for HLS/DASH content, cache invalidation through purge and secondary keys, structured logging, and metrics. Clustering and cache replication provide high availability, while optional WAF, rate limiting, and OpenTelemetry modules extend the platform beyond basic cache storage. Integrations include Docker, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, S3, Kubernetes, and OpenTelemetry. Teams that need one commercial layer for web content, APIs, streaming video, software artifacts, and S3 or object-storage content have a wide feature set to evaluate.

Pricing is contact-sales, with Varnish Enterprise presented as the main plan and a separate 30-day Enterprise Trial. The trial includes enterprise features, has no commitment, and is AWS Free Tier-eligible up to 750 hours per month. There is no free plan. That commercial model suits organizations that need persistent storage, programmable policies, high availability, and enterprise security modules, but it gives smaller teams less immediate pricing clarity. Choose Varnish Enterprise when workload variety and operational controls justify a commercial deployment; choose an alternative if open-source licensing, a free tier, or transparent self-serve pricing is more important.
