ValiDrive review
A free Windows utility for verifying whether a drive delivers its declared capacity.

ValiDrive is a free Windows desktop utility from Gibson Research Corporation for checking whether USB mass-storage drives provide the storage capacity they claim. It is aimed at buyers, technicians, and anyone investigating suspicious or counterfeit drives. Rather than performing a full media-health assessment, ValiDrive runs a quick validation across randomly distributed regions of the drive’s declared storage.
Its central workflow combines several useful checks. ValiDrive reads existing content before testing each region, writes random test data, and reads that data back for verification. It then restores the pre-test contents in the tested regions. The visual drive map distinguishes validated, read-error, write-error, and no-storage regions, while the report shows declared, validated, and highest valid drive size. Read and write access-time statistics add performance context, and internal RAM-cache detection can identify caching that may affect the results.
ValiDrive’s narrow focus is also its main boundary. The published description presents it as a quick spot-check, not a comprehensive deep test of storage media, so it is better suited to capacity verification than broad disk-health diagnostics. Its Windows-only platform further limits where it can be used. Choose ValiDrive when the key question is whether a USB drive’s usable capacity matches its claim; choose a broader diagnostic tool when surface condition or overall media health is the primary concern.
ValiDrive pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Randomly checks declared storage with read/write verification
- Restores pre-test contents in tested regions
- Maps errors, capacity results, timings, and caching signals
- Where it doesn't
- Windows only
- Spot-checking is not a comprehensive deep media test
- Focused on capacity validation rather than general disk health
