Upstash Redis is a fully managed, serverless Redis database for developers building cloud, serverless, and edge applications. It supports Redis-compatible key-value data structures and commands through both the native Redis protocol over TCP and an HTTP REST API. The service covers caching, rate limiting, queues, streams, sessions, search, and AI-agent memory use cases, making it suitable for applications that need familiar Redis behavior with cloud-based storage and scaling.

The published plans cover a free tier, usage-based billing, a fixed monthly option, and Enterprise. Free includes 256 MB of data, 10 GB of monthly bandwidth, and 500K monthly commands. Pay as You Go costs $0.2 per 100K commands and includes up to 100 GB of data, unlimited monthly bandwidth, and unlimited monthly commands. Fixed 250MB costs $10 per month with 250 MB of data, 50 GB of monthly bandwidth, and unlimited monthly commands. Enterprise adds dedicated resources, 100K+ commands per second, unlimited bandwidth and database count, and HIPAA compliance. This structure suits projects that prefer either low initial cost, usage-based billing, or defined monthly pricing.

Platform fit is a central strength. Integrations include AWS Lambda, Cloudflare Workers, Fastly Compute@Edge, Next.js, Vercel, WebAssembly, TypeScript, and Python. Persistence uses memory and cloud block storage, while replication includes primary and read replicas plus multi-region read replication. TTL, expiration commands, transactions, scripts, streams, pub/sub, JSON, search commands, and scale-to-zero behavior broaden the service beyond basic caching. Choose Upstash Redis when serverless access, REST compatibility, edge deployment, and flexible pricing matter. Choose an alternative when Redis Cluster protocol support is required.

Upstash Redis pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Redis TCP and HTTP REST access
    • Scale-to-zero behavior with automatic scaling
    • Multi-region read replication and persistent storage
  • Where it doesn't
    • Redis Cluster protocol support is unavailable
    • Pay as You Go charges by command volume
    • Fixed 250MB plan limits storage to 250 MB
