Unreal Media Server is Windows-based software for delivering live and recorded audio and video to browsers, desktop and mobile devices, and hardware players. It is suited to operators building a self-hosted streaming service for uses such as surveillance, conferencing, or digital signage. A free version provides a way to start, while the paid edition removes the free version’s broadcast and concurrent-player limits.

Protocol breadth is a central strength: ingest options include WebRTC, RTMP, RTSP, MPEG2-TS, SRT, HLS, MS-WMPS, and UMS, while delivery also includes WebSocket-video/mp4 and other listed formats. Operators can choose near-real-time or buffered live delivery, and time-shifted playback supports pausing, resuming, seeking back, and returning to live. Adaptive bitrate is available for supported delivery formats. Live playlists can switch between streams and media files, and the Unreal Archival Server DVR subsystem handles server-side recording. This makes the product more suitable for varied streaming workflows than a tool focused only on a single delivery method.

The free version is limited to 10 concurrent player connections. According to the vendor’s purchase information, the Unlimited version is a perpetual single-server license for $995 one time and includes free upgrades for future versions. That cost may suit teams that want a self-hosted server without a recurring license, but the Windows-only deployment is a significant constraint for environments standardized on other operating systems. Choose Unreal Media Server if its protocol coverage and playback controls match a Windows-based workflow; consider alternatives if cross-platform deployment or a lower-cost paid license is essential.
