Unified Write Filter review
Enterprise Windows write filtering that resets protected volumes on reboot.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Unified Write Filter (UWF) is an optional Windows feature that intercepts writes to protected volumes and redirects them to a temporary or persistent overlay. After a reboot, the temporary overlay is cleared so the device returns to its protected state. Microsoft positions UWF for thin clients, shared workspaces, schools, libraries, hotels, kiosks and other fixed-purpose devices that need consistent system behavior. It supports Windows Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise editions and is deployed on desktop devices.
Management can be handled locally with uwfmgr.exe or remotely through mobile-device management using the UnifiedWriteFilter CSP, with UWF WMI available for management workflows. Microsoft Intune/MDM integration gives administrators a central path for configuration, while RAM- or disk-based overlay settings provide options for monitoring and capacity planning. Protection covers supported hard disks, SSDs, internal USB and external SATA storage. File, folder and registry-key exclusions let administrators preserve selected changes instead of reverting every write.
UWF’s standout capability is full-volume write filtering with a servicing mode for Windows, antimalware and application updates while protection remains enabled. That combination suits fixed-purpose Windows fleets where a clean state after restart matters more than persistent local changes. Teams should account for the Windows-only platform, required edition eligibility and reboot-based restore behavior when planning deployment. Organizations needing broader operating-system coverage or controls beyond write filtering should consider another system-restore approach, while Windows administrators seeking centralized protection and update workflows can choose UWF.
