Ukelele is a free macOS utility for creating and modifying Unicode keyboard layouts. Its graphical editor lets users assign Unicode characters, multiple-character strings, and dead keys to keys, making it suitable for people working with diverse scripts and characters. The product is aimed at solo users and small teams that need a custom keyboard layout rather than a broader tool for configuring keyboards and mice.

The editor covers the core layout workflow in one desktop application. Drag-and-drop editing, undo support, keyboard layout collections, and error checking help organize and refine layouts before installation. Ukelele can install layouts for individual users or all users, and it integrates with Keyboard Juggler. The current release is distributed as a Mac DMG and supports macOS 10.14.6 and later, so its platform fit is clear but narrow.

Ukelele is strongest when the requirement is custom character entry on a Mac. It is not a general keyboard-and-mouse customization utility: its focus is keyboard layouts rather than mouse controls, macros, profiles, polling-rate settings, or onboard device memory. That makes it a good choice for language, script, and character-entry workflows, while users seeking device-level controls or broader peripheral customization should choose a product built around those functions instead. Community support is available, and the software remains free to use.
