uFTP server is a free, open-source FTP server written in C for Linux and POSIX-compliant systems. It is aimed at administrators running lightweight file-transfer services, including embedded Linux and initramfs environments. The software works with standard FTP clients and operates through a binary and configuration-file approach, making it a focused option for deployments that need FTP rather than a broader file-transfer platform.

Security and access controls are central to its feature set. uFTP server can provide TLS-encrypted connections, supports PAM and local password authentication, and lets administrators configure per-user home-directory restrictions. It also supports transfer and access logging, configurable maximum concurrent connections, active and passive FTP modes, and brute-force connection-attempt blocking. IPv6 support and daemon operation add fit for background services and network environments that require continued operation without an interactive session.

The trade-off is a narrow scope. uFTP server supports FTP and FTPS, but not SFTP, and its configuration-file model does not provide an administration interface. The product also does not include documented automation features, so teams seeking workflow orchestration or broader operational tooling may need a different FTP server. Choose uFTP server when a free, open-source Linux service with TLS, authentication choices, restrictions, logging, and connection controls matches the deployment. Consider an alternative when SFTP, interface-based administration, or automation is a core requirement.
