Ubiquiti UniFi Gateway is a family of network gateway devices with VPN server, VPN client and site-to-site capabilities. It suits organizations that already manage UniFi gateways and want to connect remote users or separate networks through that infrastructure. It is not a standalone VPN subscription for individuals seeking a general-purpose service. VPN management is available through UniFi Site Manager and mobile apps, with iOS and Android listed as platforms.

The VPN feature set covers several network needs: remote users can reach internal resources, and VPN client routing can send traffic through external VPN servers. Site-to-site connections support OpenVPN and IPsec, while the VPN server supports OpenVPN, WireGuard and L2TP. Site Magic offers SD-WAN connections between UniFi gateways, and Teleport provides one-click remote access using WireGuard technology. These options make the gateway relevant to teams connecting locations as well as users, but capabilities remain part of the UniFi gateway environment rather than a separate VPN service.

According to the published pricing details, the starting price is a one-time $129 for the least expensive listed gateway, not a software plan; device prices and availability can vary by region and over time. Ubiquiti says Cloud Gateway management and security features do not require recurring licenses. The tradeoff is that buyers must acquire gateway hardware, and the listed support channels are documentation and community. Choose it if you want VPN functions in a UniFi-managed gateway. If your priority is a standalone VPN subscription or client coverage beyond the stated iOS and Android platforms (with PC supported by Endpoint), this product is a less direct fit.

Ubiquiti UniFi Gateway pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Supports remote access and VPN client routing through external VPN servers
    • Offers site-to-site VPN with OpenVPN, IPsec and Site Magic options
    • Teleport provides one-click remote access using WireGuard technology
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires purchasing gateway hardware rather than a VPN software subscription
    • VPN management and capabilities are tied to the UniFi gateway ecosystem
    • Remote-access client coverage is narrower than Endpoint's support for PC, iOS and Android
