Twilio Serverless Toolkit is open-source command-line tooling for developers building with Twilio Functions and Assets. It can be installed as a Twilio CLI plugin or used standalone with twilio-run, and its workflow centers on scaffolding, local development, debugging, and deployment to Twilio environments. That makes it a natural fit for Twilio developers who want a CLI-based path from a project template to a deployed service, rather than a general-purpose framework for multiple serverless providers.

The toolkit’s strongest feature is its development and deployment workflow. It scaffolds projects with example Functions and a standard structure, supports local testing of Functions and Assets, and lets developers attach a debugger to function logic. Functions can be created from templates, deployed to environments, and promoted from one environment to another. Commands also list services, environments, builds, Functions, Assets, and variables, giving teams a way to inspect the resources associated with their Twilio work. Twilio CLI, Twilio Functions, Twilio Assets, and ngrok are part of its stated ecosystem.

The toolkit itself is free and open-source, but that does not make the hosted services free without limit: Twilio Functions and Assets hosting is separately priced by usage, with a monthly free allowance followed by per-invocation or request charges according to the vendor’s pricing page. Twilio Labs says the project is not supported through official Twilio support channels; users can raise issues or contribute through GitHub. Choose it when the target is Twilio Functions and Assets and a focused CLI workflow is useful. Developers seeking a broader, provider-neutral serverless framework, or official Twilio support for the toolkit, should look elsewhere.

Twilio Serverless Toolkit pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Scaffolds projects with example Functions and a standard structure
    • Supports local development, testing, and debugger attachment
    • Deploys to Twilio environments and promotes deployments between them
  • Where it doesn't
    • Focused on Twilio Functions and Assets rather than general serverless development
    • Hosting is separately priced by usage, beyond the free toolkit
    • Twilio Labs says it is not covered by official Twilio support channels
