TurnKey MediaWiki is a free, open-source Debian-based server appliance for deploying MediaWiki on infrastructure you control. It is aimed at technical users running public wikis, company intranets, knowledge bases, or content management deployments. The package combines MediaWiki with web, database, administration, SSL, and email components, giving teams a prepared starting point rather than a blank server. Release 19.0 includes MediaWiki 1.46.0, along with file uploads and image resizing through GD.

The appliance’s strongest feature is the amount of administration tooling included around the wiki. SSL support is built in, while Adminer provides a web interface for MySQL administration. Webmin modules cover Apache2, PHP, and MySQL configuration, and Postfix supports wiki email functions. Automatic operating-system security updates help maintain the underlying Debian environment. TKLBAM adds system backup and migration tooling, which is useful when moving or recovering a self-hosted deployment. TurnKey Hub and Amazon EC2 provide deployment options beyond downloading the appliance directly.

TurnKey MediaWiki suits teams that want control over hosting and are comfortable handling deployment and ongoing administration. Its open-source, self-hosted model avoids a paid hosting tier, but it also means the team remains responsible for the environment and for supervising MediaWiki application updates. Choose it when a preconfigured appliance, configuration tools, and migration support matter more than a managed service. Organizations seeking automatic application updates or a hosting provider that handles infrastructure operations should choose a managed MediaWiki alternative instead.
