Our verdict on True North Budgeting

True North Budgeting is an offline desktop app for individuals who want to manage personal finances without linking bank accounts or storing data in the cloud. Users enter income, recurring expenses, debts, assets and savings goals, then view current-month spending, pay-period balances and a 12-month forecast. The calendar brings upcoming income, expenses and goals into one view. This approach suits people who want direct control over their budget and are comfortable maintaining it manually, rather than relying on automatic transaction imports.

The feature set focuses on personal cash flow and financial progress. Configurable pay schedules and variable-income estimates help organize budgets around when money arrives, while recurring expenses can be grouped with 50/30/20 categories. Debt payoff calculations, credit utilization insights, asset and net-worth tracking, and savings milestones extend it beyond a simple expense list. Subscription tracking includes cancellation reminders. Data remains on the computer and the app works offline, but there are no bank connections or automatic transaction tracking; people who want those conveniences should consider a connected budgeting service instead.

According to the published plans, Personal costs $29.99 as a one-time purchase and includes a lifetime license, future updates, and use on one computer running Windows, Mac, or Linux. Navigator costs $49.99 one time and offers the same platform coverage and lifetime updates, with three licenses instead of one. Both are desktop plans, and there is no free plan. This pricing may suit solo users who prefer a single purchase over recurring charges, while the additional licenses may fit someone installing the software on more than one computer. Email is the listed support channel. Choose True North Budgeting for manual, private, offline personal finance tracking; skip it if mobile-first access, bank syncing or organizational budgeting is central to your needs.
