Trow is an open-source, self-hosted container registry built for Kubernetes environments. It stores and serves container images, caches images from external registries, and controls which images can run through a Kubernetes admission webhook with allow and deny lists. Helm-based installation and persistent-volume storage make it a fit for organizations that want a registry running inside their own cluster rather than a broader hosted registry service.

Its strongest case is Kubernetes-native operation with a focused feature set. Trow supports the OCI Distribution Specification, repository and tag listing APIs, tag history tracking, and the OCI referrers API. It integrates with Kubernetes, Helm, Docker, containerd, and CRI-O, giving cluster operators a direct path from registry storage to container runtime workflows. External registry caching can also help keep commonly used images available within the cluster environment.

Trow is a narrower choice than a registry platform centered on supply-chain controls or multi-site distribution. The current feature set does not include image scanning, immutable tags, or replication, while vulnerability scanning and immutable tags are described as planned features. The project is beta software, so teams should consider that status when evaluating it for production-critical workflows. Pick Trow when Kubernetes-native deployment, open-source operation, caching, and admission controls matter most. Choose an alternative when scanning, immutable tags, or replication are required now.
