Our verdict on Tributary
Tributary is an open-source, self-hosted podcast recording studio for podcasters and distributed production teams. It runs remote browser sessions through invite links, records each participant locally, and preserves separate synchronized participant and screen-share tracks. Audio and video workflows are covered, with 48 kHz WAV capture, mixed WAV exports, MP4 exports, transcription, captions, and browser-based editing. It suits teams that want control over their recording environment and a complete production path without relying on a conventional hosted subscription service.
The main trade-off is operational. Tributary is distributed as a GitHub project and runs with Node.js, pnpm, and ffmpeg, so the team responsible for deployment also owns the setup and ongoing environment management. Optional LiveKit SFU mode supports larger rooms, while LiveKit, YouTube, and Twitch extend its live-session ecosystem. Export compatibility is particularly useful for production teams already working in Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, because XML timeline exports can move edited material into those applications.
Its standout strength is the connection between recording and post-production. Local capture, progressive uploads, and crash recovery address the continuity needs of remote sessions, while text-based trimming, cuts, social clip exports, and Whisper-based speaker-labeled transcription reduce the distance between a recorded conversation and publishable assets. The scope is broad rather than narrowly focused on capture alone, but built-in AI post-production is not included, and the mobile app is described as early. Choose Tributary if self-hosting, separate local tracks, and an integrated browser-to-NLE workflow matter most; choose an alternative if you want a conventional hosted service or a more mature mobile experience.
