Our verdict on TrekGuard
TrekGuard is a free Android hiking and trekking app from Trekio Labs, aimed especially at people preparing for remote and high-altitude trails in Nepal. It combines downloadable maps for curated Nepal regions or custom areas with GPX track import and export, GPS trek recording, and backtracking. That mix suits solo trekkers who want route and safety tools in one app, particularly where connectivity may be limited after the maps and route data are downloaded.
Navigation is the clearest strength. Users can follow GPX routes with drift alerts, record distance, pace, and elevation, and backtrack along a recorded path using a compass bearing. Altitude readings draw on GPS, a barometer, and terrain; multi-day planning and acclimatization checks add preparation tools for longer treks. The app also includes an educational Lake Louise altitude-sickness self-check. These features make TrekGuard more focused on trekking than on general-purpose offline navigation. Turn-by-turn directions and offline place search are not clearly documented, so travelers who need those capabilities should compare alternatives.
The published plan is straightforward: Free costs $0 one-time, with no subscription. Core navigation works offline once maps and route data are downloaded, but map downloads, fresh weather forecasts, and emergency SMS sharing need connectivity. Weather forecasts and trek safety summaries are online features; emergency options include SMS location sharing and SOS flashlight patterns. The mobile app is Android-only, while the website provides planning tools in a browser. TrekGuard is a practical fit for Android users trekking in Nepal who value GPX-based route following and backtracking; it is less suitable for iOS users or people seeking documented turn-by-turn guidance and offline place search.
