Our verdict on treeshap

treeshap is a free, open-source R package for calculating SHAP explanations for tree ensemble models. It is aimed at teams that need to interpret supported models rather than use a hosted explainability service. The package converts compatible models into a unified representation, calculates explanations for observations, and can also predict from that representation. It is available on Linux, Windows, and macOS, and can be installed from CRAN or GitHub.

Its main strength is a focused set of tree-model explanation tools. The package supports xgboost, LightGBM, GPBoost, gbm, ranger, and randomForest. Plotting functions cover per-observation feature contributions, average absolute feature importance, and feature dependence; it also calculates and plots SHAP interaction values. A reference dataset can be set for SHAP calculations. This makes treeshap relevant when a team’s work centers on interpreting these supported model families and examining how feature effects vary across observations.

The scope is also the key constraint: treeshap is for tree ensemble models, not a general-purpose explanation package for other model types. CatBoost support is available only on a separate development branch, rather than in the main package version. It is self-hosted and lists documentation as its support channel; it does not provide counterfactuals, fairness analysis, or audit reports. Choose treeshap when its supported models and SHAP plots match the work. Teams needing those other analysis capabilities or broader model coverage should consider an alternative.
