Our verdict on TrailLegs
TrailLegs is a mobile hiking companion for people planning and hiking long-distance trails, particularly those who need to plan water, food and overnight stops along a route. Its downloadable trail maps include points of interest such as water sources, huts, campsites and resupply locations, alongside GPS position, elevation and community reports. The app is available for iPhone and Android, and the published category specifications describe global map coverage. It focuses on trails rather than general-purpose driving or city navigation.
The free plan includes offline maps for non-premium routes, trail data and points of interest, and live GPS location. Pro costs €19.99 per year and adds premium routes, custom deviations, GPX import and export, multi-day planning with accommodation advice, and extended weather, snow cover and rain radar. Pro also includes Trail Family features: group chat, meetup pins and route sharing. A seven-day free trial is listed. The free tier gives hikers a way to assess the trail-map basics, while frequent long-distance planners may value the additional route and itinerary tools enough to pay annually.
Its strongest fit is resupply-aware planning: hikers can measure distance, climb and hiking time between points, inspect relevant trail POIs, and use a multi-day planner and GPX tracks on Pro. Mapbox, OpenStreetMap and Strava are listed integrations, and the app supports community waypoint and trail-report submissions. Support channels are email and documentation, and GDPR is listed as a compliance posture. The feature list does not establish turn-by-turn navigation or offline place search, so hikers who require either should consider an alternative that explicitly provides them. TrailLegs suits solo hikers and small groups focused on trail itineraries; it is less suited to people seeking a general navigation app.
