Traefik Proxy review
A flexible free proxy for teams running self-hosted, cloud-native infrastructure.

Traefik Proxy is an open-source application proxy, reverse proxy, ingress controller, and load balancer for cloud-native applications. It is aimed at developers and DevOps teams running microservices across Kubernetes, Docker, Docker Swarm, virtual machines, and bare metal. The Open Source plan is free and includes service auto-discovery, dynamic route configuration, Layer 4 and Layer 7 routing, automatic HTTPS with Let's Encrypt support, and a built-in dashboard. It suits teams that want broad protocol coverage without adopting a managed load-balancing service.
Its main strength is the combination of routing depth and ecosystem fit. Traefik Proxy supports HTTP, HTTP/2, HTTP/3, TCP, UDP, gRPC, and WebSockets, with middleware for authentication, rate limiting, retries, compression, and traffic management. Canary and blue-green deployments extend it beyond basic traffic distribution. Integrations include Kubernetes, Docker, Docker Swarm, Red Hat OpenShift, Rancher, Amazon ECS, Consul, Nomad, etcd, and Redis. Metrics, distributed tracing, OpenTelemetry support, and connections to Prometheus, Datadog, and InfluxDB give teams several ways to connect proxy activity to existing observability workflows.
The trade-off is operational ownership. Traefik Proxy is self-hosted, so teams must deploy, configure, secure, monitor, and maintain the service in their own environments. Its automatic discovery and configuration can reduce routing administration, but they do not turn the product into a managed service. Security middleware, TLS termination, automatic HTTPS, rate limiting, and WAF capability support production traffic controls, while public plugins allow additional extension. Choose Traefik Proxy if flexibility, open-source access, and protocol breadth matter most; consider an alternative if your priority is vendor-managed deployment and day-to-day operations.
