Traefik Proxy is an open-source application proxy, reverse proxy, ingress controller, and load balancer for developers and DevOps teams running microservices or containerized infrastructure. It automatically discovers services and dynamically configures routes across Kubernetes, Docker, Docker Swarm, virtual machines, and bare metal. The self-hosted product combines Layer 4 and Layer 7 routing with load balancing, TLS termination, automatic HTTPS through Let's Encrypt, and support for HTTP, HTTP/2, HTTP/3, TCP, UDP, gRPC, and WebSockets.

The Open Source plan is free and includes the ingress controller, reverse proxy and load balancer, service auto-discovery, public plugins, and support for multiple application protocols. It also includes real-time metrics and distributed tracing. Configuration can be handled through both supported methods, while integrations extend across Kubernetes, Docker, Docker Swarm, Red Hat OpenShift, Rancher, Amazon ECS, Consul, Nomad, and etcd. For observability, Traefik Proxy connects with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Datadog, and InfluxDB.

Its feature depth suits teams that need more than basic HTTP entry-point routing. Rate limiting, authentication and security middleware, retries, compression, canary deployments, blue-green deployments, a built-in dashboard, metrics, tracing, and OpenTelemetry support cover traffic management and operational visibility in one proxy. The product also describes WAF capability and supports dynamic route configuration as services change. Teams seeking broad protocol coverage and discovery across self-hosted environments should consider Traefik Proxy. Teams wanting a narrowly focused, managed ingress service or AI features should look elsewhere.

Traefik Proxy pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Free open-source plan with Kubernetes ingress and service auto-discovery
    • Layer 4 and Layer 7 routing across HTTP, TCP, UDP, gRPC, and WebSockets
    • Automatic HTTPS, rate limiting, tracing, metrics, and deployment controls
  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosted deployment requires teams to operate it in their own environment
    • Its broad scope may exceed the needs of basic HTTP-only ingress
    • No AI features are included
