Our verdict on TopPlan

TopPlan is an open-source Windows desktop planner and Markdown task manager for people who want to organize daily work in local files. Its planning can use a main TopPlan.md file or dated workday files, with unfinished tasks rolling over according to workdays. The combination suits solo users and small teams who prefer a focused planner over a cloud-based workspace, and who are comfortable working with Markdown. It runs locally without requiring an account or cloud service.

The Markdown workflow is the product’s defining strength. Users can edit in rich-text or source view, organize tasks with parent-child relationships and visual indentation, and browse plans by day, week, or month with search. Quick notes are stored in local Markdown files, while always-on-top mini notes keep short references visible on the desktop. Optional note polishing and summaries connect through OpenAI-compatible APIs. That gives TopPlan some AI-assisted note handling without changing its local-file planning foundation; the AI features are optional rather than the core of the product.

The trade-off is a deliberately narrow platform and planning scope. TopPlan is a Windows desktop application, so it is not a fit for people who need a planner across mobile devices or other operating systems. Calendar synchronization, recurring tasks, and focus-session features are not part of its described feature set, which may matter to users who depend on those workflows.
