TimescaleDB review
A PostgreSQL-compatible engine specialized for time-series and operational workloads.

TimescaleDB is an open-source PostgreSQL extension for storing and analyzing time-series, operational, and relational data together. It is aimed at teams building applications that ingest and query sensor, operational, or analytics data while retaining PostgreSQL clients, drivers, and SQL compatibility. Deployment can be cloud-based through Tiger Cloud or self-hosted on Linux, with support for small, mid-market, and enterprise organizations.
The self-hosted option is free. Tiger Cloud uses monthly compute pricing plus storage: Performance starts at $30 per month compute with storage at $0.177/GB-month, while Scale starts at $36 per month compute with storage at $0.212/GB-month. Both paid tiers include pay-as-you-go hourly billing. Enterprise has custom pricing, services supporting up to 64 CPU and 256GB memory, up to 64TB storage, and 24/7 production support for severe incidents. Actual cloud spend varies with configured compute and storage use, so teams should budget for both components.
Its strongest case is specialized time-series capability: hypertables provide automatic partitioning, hybrid row and columnar storage supports compression and filtering on compressed data, and incremental continuous aggregates and retention policies reduce recurring data-management work. Time-series functions, hyperfunctions, and pgvector integration add analysis and semantic search options. PostgreSQL-compatible clients and tools connect with Kafka, Grafana, Metabase, Power BI, Airbyte, dbt, Terraform, Python, and Node.js. SSO via SAML and HIPAA support are listed, alongside email, ticket, community, and documentation channels. Choose TimescaleDB when time-series behavior is central; teams seeking a broadly general-purpose PostgreSQL host may need another service.
TimescaleDB pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Hypertables automate time- or ID-based partitioning.
- Columnar storage, compression, and continuous aggregates target analytics workloads.
- Works with PostgreSQL tools plus Kafka, Grafana, dbt, and pgvector.
- Where it doesn't
- Cloud compute and storage are billed separately.
- Enterprise pricing is custom rather than listed upfront.
- Its specialized focus may not fit general-purpose PostgreSQL hosting needs.
