The Devourer is an open-source, portable Windows utility for deleting one regular local file at a time. It is aimed at users who want more control than ordinary deletion provides, particularly when storage risks such as SSD wear-leveling, TRIM, BitLocker, shadow copies, and alternate data streams need to be considered. The portable executable requires no installer and supports both drag-and-drop and file-picker workflows.

Its standout feature is a layered deletion design. The primary file data is overwritten through four passes, while detected NTFS alternate data streams are also wiped. Normal, Aggressive, and Extreme modes add progressively stronger operations. Aggressive mode includes Windows ReTrim, and Extreme mode fills free space on the same volume. Random filename replacement, write flushing, selected metadata clearing, and live progress reporting add visibility to the deletion process without broadening the tool beyond file-focused shredding.

The Devourer is best suited to Windows 10 and Windows 11 x64 users who need portable, risk-aware deletion of individual local files. It is not the right choice for users seeking folder-level shredding or complete drive wiping, since those capabilities are not supported. The project also frames its results as best-effort: physical erasure cannot be guaranteed when storage behavior, snapshots, backups, cloud replicas, or other copies are involved. Choose it for focused file shredding with explicit storage-risk checks; choose another category of tool for whole-drive or broad data-lifecycle removal.

The Devourer pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Four-pass overwriting covers primary data and NTFS alternate data streams.
    • Extreme mode fills same-volume free space; Aggressive mode runs Windows ReTrim.
    • Portable drag-and-drop workflows include live progress and SSD/NVMe risk checks.
  • Where it doesn't
    • Processes one regular local file at a time.
    • File-folder shredding and drive wiping are not supported.
    • Physical erasure cannot be guaranteed on SSDs, backups, or cloud replicas.
