Thanos review
A powerful Prometheus extension for global queries and long-term metrics retention.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Thanos is an open-source set of components for teams operating Prometheus across multiple servers or clusters. It adds a global query layer, a PromQL-compatible interface, long-term storage, high-availability replica deduplication, historical data access, and rule evaluation. Its fit is strongest for infrastructure teams that want to extend an existing Prometheus ecosystem rather than adopt a standalone commercial monitoring service.
The platform’s ecosystem is a central strength. Thanos works with Prometheus and Grafana, exposes the Prometheus HTTP API, and supports object-storage backends including Google Cloud Storage, Amazon S3, Azure Storage, OpenStack Swift, and Tencent COS. Thanos Receive adds Prometheus Remote Write ingestion, while downsampling and block compaction support historical metrics workflows. This makes it suitable for organizations consolidating metrics across clusters, preserving long-term data, or querying a wider Prometheus estate through one layer.
Thanos is open source and self-hosted, so its value comes from the capabilities and integrations it adds to a surrounding stack rather than from packaged SaaS administration. Teams deploy its components themselves alongside Prometheus and compatible storage systems, which makes architecture and operational ownership important selection factors. Choose Thanos when global querying, long-term object storage, HA deduplication, remote write, and rule evaluation justify that broader setup. A narrower Prometheus deployment or a team seeking a standalone hosted monitoring product may prefer an alternative with fewer components to operate.
Thanos pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Global PromQL-compatible querying across multiple Prometheus clusters
- Long-term object storage with downsampling and block compaction
- HA replica deduplication, remote write, and rule evaluation
- Where it doesn't
- Requires self-hosted deployment alongside Prometheus
- Needs a broader surrounding stack and compatible object storage
- More infrastructure-focused than a standalone monitoring service
