TaskExplorer review
Deep live process inspection for technical users, without alerting, history, or remote monitoring.

TaskExplorer is an open-source desktop task-management and system-monitoring application for developers, IT professionals, and power users. It supports Windows and Linux, combining real-time process data with resource graphs and detailed inspection panels. The product is aimed at users who need to understand what processes are doing, how they use system resources, and which files, sockets, modules, services, or drivers are connected to them.
Its standout strength is the depth of live inspection in a desktop application. Users can examine thread stack traces, view and edit process memory with string search, inspect open handles with file metadata, and monitor sockets with data-rate information. TaskExplorer also covers loaded DLLs, memory-mapped files, CPU, memory, disk I/O, network, and GPU performance graphs. Linux users get panels for control groups, security, pressure, and systemd daemons, while Windows and Linux users can access service and driver controls. This makes it a strong fit for detailed troubleshooting and system analysis rather than basic task viewing.
The trade-off is its narrow monitoring model. TaskExplorer focuses on live inspection and local control, but it does not provide alerting, historical monitoring, or remote monitoring. That limits its suitability for teams that need ongoing fleet visibility, retained performance data, or notifications when conditions change. Choose TaskExplorer when deep process and system detail on Windows or Linux matters most, especially for development, IT work, and advanced desktop analysis. Choose an alternative when monitoring must extend beyond the current machine or include alert-driven and historical workflows.
