Tailscale review
Affordable overlay networking with broad platform coverage and scalable access controls.

Tailscale is an identity-based connectivity platform for teams connecting users, devices, servers, cloud environments, Kubernetes clusters, and workloads. Its encrypted peer-to-peer overlay networking supports AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and Oracle Cloud, with clients for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. Administration is available through a web console and API, while subnet routers, MagicDNS, access control lists, VPN exit nodes, split tunneling, and Tailscale SSH cover common network access needs. It suits teams that want overlay networking without traditional gateway configuration.
Pricing gives smaller teams a low-commitment starting point. The Personal plan is free forever and includes unlimited user devices, up to 6 users, up to 3 ACL groups, up to 50 tagged resources, and 1,000 minutes per month for ephemeral resources. Standard costs $8 per user per month when billed monthly and adds unlimited users, SCIM provisioning, up to 10 ACL groups, MDM configuration, and device posture integrations. Premium costs $18 per user per month monthly and adds up to 300 ACL groups, 10,000 ephemeral-resource minutes per month, just-in-time access, network flow logs, log streaming, regional routing, and traffic steering. Enterprise offers custom pricing, custom device quantities and limits, implementation assistance, custom SLAs, and premium support.
Its ecosystem fit is a major strength. Tailscale connects with Okta, Google, Microsoft Entra ID, OneLogin, GitHub, Apple ID, JumpCloud, Ping Identity, Keycloak, GitLab, Duo, Auth0, and AWS Cognito, alongside Terraform and Pulumi integrations. Kubernetes networking and multicloud, multi-region connectivity broaden its use beyond device-to-device VPN access. Network flow logs are positioned as logging rather than live monitoring, so teams seeking a dedicated real-time network monitoring product may need another tool. Choose Tailscale for affordable identity-based connectivity across varied platforms and cloud environments; consider alternatives if extensive built-in monitoring is the primary requirement.
