Synology Router Manager review
A free, focused control center for managing small Synology router networks.

Synology Router Manager (SRM) is a web-based operating system for Synology networking products. It is aimed at administrators of small Synology router networks who need one place to configure internet, VLAN, dual-WAN, and local-network settings; manage Wi-Fi, mesh, SSIDs, and band steering; and monitor connected devices. Administration is available through a web portal, while the DS router mobile application supports setup and mobile management on iOS and Android.
SRM’s free model keeps its core network-management capabilities straightforward to evaluate and deploy on supported Synology routers. The published product details cover traffic monitoring, device usage reporting, network discovery, connected-device monitoring, traffic-control and QoS rules, firewall controls, intrusion prevention, threat databases, and configuration backup and restore. Additional packages include Safe Access, VPN Plus Server, and Threat Prevention. This combination gives small environments coverage across daily administration, visibility, segmentation, security, and recovery without a paid tier structure described here.
The main trade-off is focus. SRM is built around Synology networking products and uses an on-premises deployment model, so it is a more natural fit for organizations standardizing on that ecosystem than for teams managing varied network hardware. Network segmentation through VLANs and isolated networks is useful for separating traffic, while web and mobile access suit local administration. However, the lack of verified API access and broader enterprise integrations limits its fit for general network-management programs with extensive automation or multi-vendor requirements. Choose SRM for a small Synology-based environment; consider a broader platform when cross-vendor management is central.
Synology Router Manager pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Free SRM covers routing, Wi-Fi, traffic, discovery, QoS, and security
- VLANs and isolated networks support practical network segmentation
- Web, iOS, and Android access support administration and mobile management
- Where it doesn't
- Designed for Synology networking products rather than general network environments
- No verified API access for broader automation and integration needs
- On-premises deployment may not fit cloud-first network operations
