Our verdict on swisstopo
swisstopo brings Switzerland’s national maps, aerial imagery, historical and aviation maps, and outdoor route information to iOS and Android. It is aimed at people exploring the country on foot, by bicycle or on snow sports tours. Hikers and cyclists can plan and edit routes, record tours, and track arrival time and remaining distance. Downloaded map sections and layers support offline use, while offline search for geographic names and addresses requires downloading the relevant datasets first.
Its strongest fit is Swiss outdoor planning rather than general-purpose navigation. Tour planning covers hiking, cycling, mountain biking, skiing and snowshoeing, and map data can also be downloaded along a planned tour. Coordinate, postal-code, address, geographic-name and point-of-interest searches add useful ways to find destinations. Panorama mode labels landmarks and summits in the camera view. The app can route on foot or by public transport from a current location to a destination, but the published description does not clearly establish step-by-step turn-by-turn guidance. People who need that as a core navigation feature should compare alternatives.
The Free plan includes app features and offline map storage, so the product does not split its listed capabilities across paid tiers. GPX and KML import and export allow tours and markers to move between compatible tools, and MeteoSwiss is listed as an integration. The key geographic boundary is important: foreign Base Map data is online-only, while offline downloads are documented for Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Choose swisstopo for free offline maps and outdoor tour planning in that region; it is less suited to travelers needing offline maps across countries or anyone seeking clearly specified turn-by-turn navigation.
