Swift Stream IDE is an open-source VS Code extension for containerized Swift development. It is aimed at solo developers and small teams working across Android, web, server, embedded, and general-purpose Swift projects. Docker and Dev Containers provide project environments, while the Start New Project wizard helps create projects. The extension runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS, with Android support for native apps and libraries through JNI, including compilation and execution on devices or emulators.

Its main strength is breadth within a Swift-focused workflow. Developers can switch toolchains and control Swift project environments, then move beyond mobile work into Swift WebAssembly, Webpack, TypeScript, NPM, and SCSS for web projects. Server development includes Vapor and Hummingbird, while embedded targets include ESP32, Raspberry Pi Pico, STM32, and nrf52. Deployment and ecosystem connections include Ngrok, Nginx, Fly.io, Heroku, Azure, Alibaba Cloud, Cloudflare, DigitalOcean, Firebase, Vercel, and Yandex Cloud.

The key boundary is Apple-platform development. Swift Stream IDE supports Android as its mobile target and does not provide direct iOS or macOS application development; those projects still require Xcode. It also lacks a visual UI designer, which may make it less suitable for teams that prefer visual interface construction. Developers seeking a free, open-source environment for Android JNI work or multi-target Swift development should consider it. Developers focused on iOS or macOS apps should choose a workflow centered on Xcode instead.
