svn2git, also called svn-all-fast-export, is a command-line utility that converts a server-side Subversion repository into one or more Git repositories. It is intended for teams moving Subversion history into Git, including small teams through enterprise organizations. This is a migration tool, not a day-to-day version-control system or a hosted repository manager, so teams looking for a place to collaborate on Git repositories will need a separate product.

Its main strength is control over how Subversion paths become Git repositories and branches. A ruleset can map paths, ignore selected paths, recurse into paths, or add file-path prefixes. The tool can import SVN branch contents as Git branches, preserve SVN metadata in Git commits, and turn SVN ignore properties into .gitignore files. These options make it relevant when a migration needs more than a basic file copy, particularly when path structure and commit history matter. The conversion still depends on defining rules that fit the source repository.

The project is open source and free, with no commercial plans described. It supports Linux and self-hosted deployment, and the project documents building from source as well as running in Docker. That gives technically equipped teams options for preparing a controlled migration environment, but it is not a managed service. Choose svn2git when the goal is to convert SVN repositories and retain useful history or metadata; look elsewhere if you need ongoing version control, hosted repositories, or a broader collaboration workflow.

    • Can be built from source and run in Docker
  • Where it doesn't
    • Focused on migration, not ongoing version control or repository hosting
    • Requires command-line use and a self-hosted environment
    • Rulesets need to map repository paths and branches for each migration
