SUSE Private Registry review
A feature-rich private registry for teams standardizing on SUSE Rancher.

SUSE Private Registry is an on-premises registry for storing and distributing container images and OCI artifacts. It is aimed at SUSE customers, particularly teams running SUSE Rancher Prime or Rancher Suite and requiring control over registry deployment. Administration is available through web and command-line interfaces, while role-based access control supports access management across teams. Deployment uses a Helm chart on Kubernetes and can run with high-availability configurations.
The published offering centers on the SUSE Private Registry Add-on, which is available for Rancher Prime and included in Rancher Suite. SUSE also positions the registry alongside SUSE Security, SUSE Application Collection, Trivy, Cosign, and Harbor. The product uses Trivy for vulnerability scanning, supports immutable tags and retention policies, and provides image replication between registry instances. Mirroring and pull-through caching can help connect private storage with external image sources, while garbage collection controls support storage management. Storage capacity and maximum image size depend on the customer-managed deployment.
Its feature set extends beyond basic image storage: stored images can receive SBOMs, and Cosign content trust supports signature verification. Harbor provides the underlying foundation, giving the product a familiar direction for teams already aligned with that ecosystem. The trade-off is operational ownership: this is a self-hosted Kubernetes component rather than a hosted registry service, and the commercial path runs through Rancher offerings and contact sales. Choose it when SUSE Rancher integration, private OCI storage, scanning, replication, and content trust matter together. Teams seeking a managed registry with independently published plan pricing should consider another approach.
