Our verdict on Streetmix
Streetmix is a browser-based tool for residents, educators, planners, and civic organizations designing neighborhood street cross-sections. Users arrange adjustable sidewalks, bike lanes, transit, parking, trees, and traffic lanes, then compare alternatives and share them by URL. Street-capacity metrics, image exports, and collaboration features support workshops, classroom activities, and community-engagement processes.
The freemium offering starts with the Personal plan, which covers common street elements, remixing and sharing, and web-friendly image exports. Plus (beta) adds unlimited streets, renamed street segments, adjustable backgrounds and environments, and higher-resolution exports without a watermark. Partner is aimed at organizations needing prioritized feature or technical support, in-house development expertise, or custom and whitelabel deployments. This structure suits teams that want to begin with lightweight prototyping and expand when their workflow requires additional control or vendor involvement.
Streetmix runs as a hosted web service or through self-hosting, and it is open source under AGPL. Export connections to Streetmeter and 3DStreet extend concepts into analysis and 3D workflows, while email, community, and documentation channels provide support routes. Its focus remains street-segment design and public engagement: the published category profile does not position it as a zoning, land-use, spatial-analysis, or 3D-visualization system. Communities seeking quick, shareable street ideas should find the focused scope useful; organizations needing comprehensive planning analysis should choose a broader platform.
