Our verdict on StoryBox

StoryBox is a freeware Windows desktop writing application for novelists who want planning tools and publishing exports in one workspace. Its dockable panels organize synopsis, notes, outlines, and storyboards, while full-screen mode supports distraction-free drafting and side-by-side document views. Solo writers and small teams working primarily on Windows can also track word counts, set a countdown timer, import existing projects and multiple files, and keep work saved automatically with project backups.

The publishing workflow is a central strength. StoryBox can export HTML, RTF, plain text, ePub, and mobi files, with vendor-specific profiles for ePub output. The Free plan includes the Windows writing workspace, ePub and mobi export, outlining, and storyboarding. Dropbox and Calibre are listed integrations, giving the application defined connections within a writing and ebook workflow. Writers who already organize projects around these tools may find the export path more suitable than a basic drafting application.

StoryBox is a focused desktop choice rather than a cross-platform writing system. The vendor states that it remains usable but has not been updated since 2016, which matters for writers seeking an actively maintained product. It also has no mobile apps, and a verified version-history feature is not described. Choose StoryBox if free Windows software, structured novel planning, automatic backups, and publishing-oriented exports are the priorities. Writers who need mobile access, current ongoing development, or verified version history should consider a different application.
