Our verdict on Celtx
Celtx brings scriptwriting and media production planning into a cloud-based workspace for screenwriters, stage writers, filmmakers, educators, and production teams. Its editors automatically format screenplay, stageplay, and multi-column scripts, while collaborators can write in real time, comment, request approvals, and share read-only links. Story development features include beat sheets, storyboards, and script goals; production tools cover breakdowns, shot lists, schedules, budgets, and call sheets. That combination makes Celtx particularly relevant to writers moving a script toward production, rather than someone seeking only a place to draft prose.
The free plan supports one project, cloud-based script editors, real-time collaboration, read-only history versions, and shareable links. The Writer plan costs $11.24 per user per month with annual billing and raises the project limit to three while adding unlimited comments. Writer Pro costs $18.74 per user per month with annual billing, and adds unlimited projects and story development tools. Team, Education, and Student plans include various production or administration features; the listed Team plan is for five members, while Student requires a student email. A seven-day free trial is available. The paid tiers are most pertinent when a writer needs more project capacity, story tools, or production planning.
Celtx's workflow reaches beyond drafting: script revisions, subscriber version preview and restore, text-to-speech read-through, PDF printing and download, and planning tools can support collaboration through production. It is available on web, macOS, and Android. Offline access is less straightforward: the Help Center says offline mode was sunset in 2023, while the Google Play listing describes offline editing in the Android app with later synchronization. Writers prioritizing offline work, broad platform coverage, or a wider range of export formats may prefer another option. For production-oriented screenwriters coordinating with a team, Celtx's breadth is a better fit than for writers who need a focused, portable drafting tool.
