Our verdict on Story Planner for Writers
Story Planner for Writers is a planning and drafting app for novels, screenplays, and other writing projects. It is designed for solo writers and small writing operations that want to structure scenes, chapters, acts, characters, plots, locations, notes, and custom project fields in one workspace. Rich-text writing fields support drafting, while templates and project sections help adapt the app to different writing workflows. The app runs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with iCloud synchronization across Apple devices.
Pricing is paid and one-time rather than subscription-based. The iPhone & iPad plan costs $8.99 and is a universal purchase for both devices, with iOS 15.3 or later required. The Mac plan costs $12.99 and requires macOS 12.2 or later. The published plans show separate purchases for iOS and macOS, and there is no free trial. A 14-day refund period is available. For writers who prefer a single upfront payment and already work within Apple’s ecosystem, this pricing structure is straightforward; writers seeking a browser-based or cross-platform plan will need another option.
Its strongest area is planning depth. Writers can manage multiple layers of story structure, review drafts and outlines in revision mode, set progress goals and deadlines, view statistics, and use widgets for tracking. Automatic and manual backups with restore add protection for projects, while iCloud handles synchronization and iCloud Drive provides an integration point. Export tools cover common writing and publishing destinations, including PDF, Word, RTF, Scrivener, Final Draft, and TXT. Story Planner for Writers fits writers who need structured development and revision tools on Apple hardware; it is less suitable for collaborative teams or anyone specifically seeking AI assistance.
