StarRocks review
A self-hosted MPP SQL engine for teams building real-time lakehouse analytics.

StarRocks is an open-source massively parallel processing database for OLAP, real-time analytics, high-concurrency workloads, ad-hoc queries, and unified analytics. It is aimed at engineering and data teams building analytical warehouses, lakehouse systems, dashboards, and user-facing analytics applications. Standard SQL and MySQL protocol compatibility support familiar access patterns, while the vectorized execution engine and cost-based optimizer target analytical query performance.
Its strongest fit is a lakehouse environment with varied ingestion and storage needs. External catalogs let teams query data lakes without migration, and supported systems include Apache Iceberg, Apache Hudi, Delta Lake, Apache Hive, Apache Paimon, object storage, local filesystems, and HDFS. Streaming and batch loading work with Kafka, Flink, and Spark, while connectors also cover Elasticsearch and JDBC databases including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and SQL Server. Apache Ranger integration and row-level access policies add controls for teams that need data access rules within analytical workloads.
StarRocks also covers both warehouse-style and application-facing use cases through materialized views, real-time upsert and delete operations, and standard SQL connectivity. Deployment can be manual, with Docker, or on Kubernetes, but the model remains self-hosted and requires operational ownership. That makes it a strong choice for teams prepared to manage their analytical infrastructure and connect several data systems. Teams seeking a vendor-priced SaaS service or a fully managed deployment should consider a different category of product.
StarRocks pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Vectorized MPP execution with cost-based query optimization
- Materialized views plus real-time upserts and deletes
- Queries lake data through external catalogs without migration
- Where it doesn't
- Self-hosted deployment requires operational ownership
- Deployment is limited to Linux, API, and self-hosted environments
- Broad analytical scope may require dedicated engineering resources
