Starburst Enterprise Context Layer review
A governed semantic layer for federated data products, metrics, BI, APIs, and AI agents.

Starburst Enterprise Context Layer is a semantic layer for organizations that need governed, versioned data products across distributed sources. It defines metrics, dimensions, and relationships while attaching access policies, ownership, and lineage. Teams can publish these products to BI tools, applications, APIs, and AI agents, making it suited to federated data product and metrics governance rather than a narrow metrics catalog.
Pricing is based on compute credits. The Free plan is free forever and supports up to 3 clusters with standard cluster execution for ad hoc queries. Pro costs $0.50 per credit and adds flexible execution modes, Streaming Ingest, and advanced cluster management. Enterprise costs $0.75 per credit and adds advanced autoscaling, fine-grained access controls, AWS PrivateLink for data sources, and AIDA, with token usage billed separately. Mission-Critical costs $1 per credit and adds elite support and ticketing, advanced governance integrations, lakehouse security and compliance tools, the highest uptime guarantees, and AIDA with token usage billed separately. A 30-day trial is available.
Its platform fit is broad: federated queries can connect distributed data sources, while consumption is available through Tableau, Power BI, JDBC, REST, APIs, and MCP. Listed integrations include Amazon S3, Apache Iceberg, Snowflake, and PostgreSQL. Data products can be managed as code through YAML and Git workflows, with CI/CD validation and lineage checks. Deployment spans web, API, and self-hosted access, with Starburst Enterprise supporting private cloud, hybrid, and on-premises environments and Starburst Galaxy providing managed cloud service. Choose it for governed federation and controlled analytics or AI access; choose a narrower semantic tool if those governance and deployment requirements are unnecessary.

- Where it doesn't
- Pricing is metered by compute credit rather than a monthly subscription
- The Context Layer is part of broader Galaxy and Enterprise offerings
- AIDA token usage is billed separately on Enterprise and Mission-Critical
