stagelint is a command-line Git hook tool for running linters, formatters and type checkers on files about to be committed, then staging fixes. It is aimed at solo, small and mid-market teams that want consistent checks across local commits, continuous integration and coding-agent workflows. The single binary runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with installation options spanning several language and operating-system package managers.

Its standout capability is protecting partially staged work. stagelint three-way merges formatter output so unstaged edits remain intact while staged files receive fixes. Nested configuration files support monorepos, and configurable concurrency enables parallel task execution. The same configuration can run from a pre-commit hook, existing hook managers and CI, reducing differences between local checks and pipeline checks. Running `stagelint init` installs the pre-commit hook, while the tool can also return failures directly to coding agents.

Ecosystem coverage is broad for a commit-focused utility: integrations include GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, pre-commit, Lefthook, husky, Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot CLI, Gemini CLI, Cursor, aider and OpenCode. The open-source MIT license supports self-managed adoption without a subscription tier structure. Teams should choose stagelint when staged-file safety, monorepo configuration and shared CI or agent workflows matter most. Its commit-stage focus, documentation-only support channel and command-line operation make it less suitable for organizations seeking multi-stage Git controls, live support or a graphical administration experience.

  • Where it doesn't
    • Hook scope centers on commit-stage checks
